Heartbroken man whose wife died suddenly in her sleep says 'her final act gives me comfort'

Patrick O'Sullivan suffered tremendous loss when his wife Geraldine passed away suddenly in their home last year, but says he is comforted by his precious wife's last act.

Patrick, 67, from Merthyr Tydfil in Wales, shared the story of how Geraldine died unexpectedly.

"We were out shopping all day and when we came home, we decided to have a cup of tea in the garden. It was then that Geraldine started complaining of a bad headache, so I got her some tablets, and she went to rest on the sofa.

"Minutes later I saw her having a seizure and she fell off the sofa, so I called 999 and within 20 minutes the ambulance arrived and whisked her off to Cardiff Hospital."

Upon arrival at the hospital, doctors performed an emergency CT scan which revealed that Geraldine suffered the catastrophic bleed on the brain and that the pressure from this created a second "non-survivable" bleed.

Years previously, the couple expressed their wish to be organ donors by signing up to the NHS Organ Donor Register.

Patrick spoke of how he knew for sure what Geraldine wanted him to do in this impossible situation: "I remember being in the hospital and on the shelf was a leaflet for organ donation.

"I took it that someone was telling me something and I had to make sure that Geraldine got her last wish."

Geraldine ultimately donated both kidneys and her liver, an act which provides Patrick with tremendous comfort and leaves a legacy of duty to others.

"Geraldine worked in a hospital, she was a caring person and she helped someone right to the end."

Patrick has a message for those considering organ donation in the case of death where donation is possible.

"Do it. Do it. If your loved one has expressed that decision to donate, make sure that they do it. It’s nice to know there are people out there alive today because we were willing to honour Geraldine’s organ donation decision."

In Ireland, people wishing to become organ donors can give consent by carrying a donor card which can be gotten here, noting consent on your driving license or getting a digital organ donor card.

For information on organ donation in Ireland, Organ Donation and Transplant Ireland (OTDI) can be contacted by phone on 01 7784361 or by email at odti@hse.ie. The OTDI address has its address at Bridgewater House, Conyngham Road, Islandbridge, Dublin 8 (Eircode: D08 T9NH).
