Greens' lawyer new MLC in NSW parliament

David Shoebridge will be replaced by lawyer Sue Higginson as Greens MLC in NSW's upper house. (AAP)

A public interest environmental lawyer has succeeded outgoing Greens MLC David Shoebridge in NSW Parliament's upper house.

Sue Higginson previously worked as the principal solicitor and CEO at the Environmental Defenders Office, a Queensland-based not-for-profit environmental law centre.

"I was responsible for the highest-profile environmental litigation in the country," Ms Higginson's website reads.

"I took on mining giants Adani, Whitehaven, BHP, Rio Tinto and many others in the Courts and won.

"I have taken on governments in the courts and won."

Ms Higginson was nominated for the vacant seat by Greens MLC Cate Faehrmann on Thursday.

"Mr President, I move that Ms Susan Higginson be elected as a member of the Legislative Council to fill the seat .... vacated by Mr David Shoebridge," she told parliament.

Ms Higginson says she has a proven track record of getting results for the planet, people and democracy.

"Now, I'm ready to be your advocate and fight this fight with you as your new Greens MP in the NSW Parliament," she says on her website.

The NSW upper house seat was vacated by Mr Shoebridge, who is looking to switch to federal politics.

Mr Shoebridge is campaigning in the federal election and hopes to become a NSW Senator on May 21.
