Gilgo Beach serial murderer charged with fourth killing, no bail requested

Gilgo Beach serial murder suspect charged with fourth killing.

In a major development today, a suspect in the infamous Gilgo Beach serial murders has been charged with a fourth killing. The suspect, who was already facing first-degree murder charges in connection with the deaths of three women, now faces an additional charge of second-degree intent to kill murder of Maureen Baynard Barnes.

Barnes, a 25-year-old sex worker, was last seen in 2007 and her remains were discovered near Gilgo Beach, Long Island, close in proximity to the other victims. Law enforcement officials had long considered the suspect a prime suspect in her murder, given the circumstances surrounding the case.

Authorities revealed that there was communication between Barnes and a burner phone, which they believe was linked to the suspect. Additionally, her own cell phone was used after her disappearance, with someone calling her voicemail to check for messages. These factors had raised suspicion but led to a dead end in the investigation.

However, a breakthrough occurred recently when the case was reopened in 2022. At that time, new evidence emerged linking the suspect's wife, Asa Ellerup, to the crimes. Sophisticated testing of a hair found on one of the belts used to restrain Barnes revealed a match to Ellerup. Further investigation revealed that Ellerup's hairs were found on all the victims, except when she was out of town with her family in Atlantic City for two weeks in 2007, coinciding with the suspected time of the murders.

Additional details from the 16-page indictment provide insight into the suspect's behavior prior to Barnes' disappearance. He had acquired a shredding device for his computer, indicating an attempt to hide potentially incriminating evidence. However, the device apparently failed to function properly.

With the suspect now facing four counts of murder, the prosecution is requesting no bail. This development marks a significant milestone in a case that has haunted the Long Island community for over a decade. Families of the victims, law enforcement officials, and the public hope that these new charges will bring them a step closer to justice.

As the legal proceedings unfold, individuals closely involved with the case will be closely monitoring developments. The accused suspect's potential bail hearing will be of particular interest, as it will shed light on how the court considers the severity of the charges and the potential flight risk of the suspect.

The indictment serves as a reminder of the tireless efforts of law enforcement officials and the criminal justice system in pursuing justice for the victims and their families. As the trial progresses, many will be watching closely, hoping for a resolution to this tragic case that has gripped the nation.
