From fees to women’s safety: What are the key issues in Delhi University polls?

After a hiatus of three years, Delhi University campuses are now abuzz with election campaigns. Thousands of students are set to cast their vote for the four central posts in the Delhi University Student Union, also known as DUSU, on September 22. In the fray are candidates from the RSS student body's ABVP, Congress’ NSUI, AISA affiliated to the CPI (L), SFI affiliated to the CPI, and the Aam Aadmi Party’s CYSS.

With the polling day drawing close, the campaigning has intensified, and the candidates are underlying specific poll planks. Hitesh Gulia, NSUI’s presidential candidate, told Newslaundry that corruption and fee hike on campus are the big issues. “Education is not accessible to the poor... Besides that, we will be focusing on women’s safety.”

Aiyesha Ahmed Khan, AISA’s presidential candidate, said FYUP and privatisation are the main concerns she is contesting on. Meanwhile, ABVP’s joint secretary candidate, Sachin Baisla said, “Students should get special bus facilities and subsidised metro fares. It is one of the main issues raised by our party.”

But what is the undercurrent at the university? From rent to fees, campus infrastructure, and women’s safety—what are the key poll issues for the students?
