Fortnite update 29.40 release date: Star Wars comes to Battle Royale this week

We are on the cusp of a new Star Wars-drenched era of Fortnite.

Update 29.40 kicks off a Star Wars collaboration, timed to arrive just ahead of Star Wars Day, May 4. If you don’t get the pun, just think about that date for a second.

It will bring a new island, fresh Star Wars weapons, skins and loads of new LEGO versions of previously released outfits — Star Wars-themed ones and many others.

As usual, the game’s servers should go down in the morning of the update, known as version 29.40, stopping players from joining a match.

Here’s when you can expect the downtime to occur, which should unleash loads of galactic goodies on the Fortnite Shop.

When is Fortnite update version 29.40 coming out?

Epic Games has announced the 29.40 update is coming on May 3, giving enough time for any launch issues to be fixed ahead of Star Wars Day, May 4. It ends on May 14.

Version 29.40 could also be the last update of Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 2. The game’s current season is expected to have four updates, three of which have already been implemented.

As such, there’s a possibility version 29.40 could be the last hurrah for the current Myths and Mortals season before the launch of Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 3 (possibly) on May 24.

Fortnite update version 29.40 features

Epic has spilled the beans on everything coming in update 29.40. There are major new additions across Battle Royale, LEGO Fortnite and Rocket Racing. Let’s dig into some of the crucial bits.

LEGO Fortnite is getting a new island, on which you’ll find the Rebel Village. You build this up and upgrade it through 10 levels by completing objectives.

You’ll also find a downed Star Destroyer in a Crash Site area. Fortnite says this will stay after the Star Wars event has finished too.

Fortnite Battle Royale will get a series of Star Wars Quests, heading to the game in two chunks. The first arrives on May 3, and the second lot on May 7. And if you want to play them, you’ll need to do so before May 14 when the Star Wars event closes up shop.

Completing five of these quests will also level up your Battle Pass. The lead addition, though, might be the new Chewbacca skin coming to Battle Royale as part of version 29.40.

You’ll also be able to visit the classic Mos Eisley Cantina at the Fortnite Festival Jam Stage.

Care more about Fortnite Rocket Racing? It’s going to get a series of Star Wars quests too, again launching in two tranches on May 3 and May 7. Completing four of them unlocks an Anakin Podracer decal, while eight unlocks a Darth Maul decal.
