Former Gogglebox star served time in jail and other personalities who quit the show

Gogglebox fans rejoiced as the new season returned to our screens earlier this month.

Armchair critics such as Pete Sandiford, Izzi Warner and Lee Riley thrilled viewers as they once again invited us into their homes to provide hilarious observations on the week's best TV. Fans were also taken aback as a new pair of cast members were introduced to the programme last week.

Danielle and Daniella hail from Leeds and showed off their witty sense of humours on their debut episode. Viewers following the programme were quick to compare the pair to former Gogglebox favourites, Sandi Bogle and Sandra Martin.

Sandi decided to quit the show in 2016 to pursue other opportunities. Sandra quit in 2017 as she was left devastated by her friend's exit. She revealed on Twitter: "After Sandi left I missed her so much. Plus it was a contract show. You cant do certain shows like Big Brother if you're on Gogglebox."

Sandi took part in many reality TV shows, including Celebs On The Farm, Celebrity 100% Hotter and Celebrity Fat Fighters. She also entered the Celebrity Big Brother house in 2017 - where she was sixth to be evicted.

As the latest edition of Gogglebox airs tonight, we thought we'd round up some more of the TV personalities who quit the show.

George Gilbey

George Gilbey last appeared on Gogglebox in 2018 (Channel 4)

George Gilbey first shot to fame in series 2 and quickly became firm favourites with viewers alongside his mum Linda and step dad Pete McGarry. However, they were all booted off the show in 2014 when George defied the rules about going on other TV shows and went into the Celebrity Big Brother house.

After finishing in fourth place, George and his family finally returned to Gogglebox in 2016. However, he started to make less appearances on the show after a string of controversies.

In October 2019, George was jailed for three months after being found guilty of drink-driving. During an appearance at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on October 1, he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving a motor vehicle with an alcohol level above the legal limit.

George last appeared on Gogglebox in 2018. Linda and Pete continued to make appearances on the show, before Pete died aged 71 in 2021 following a short illness.

Paige Deville

Paige Deville used to appear on the show alongside her mum, Sally (Channel 4)

Paige quit the show last year after accusing show bosses of providing "zero aftercare support". The TV star appeared on the show alongside her mum, Sally, but announced on Twitter she was walking away from the programme.

She said: "It’s been an experience but one I cannot continue with due to long hours of filming, restrictiveness, control of our actions and opinions & zero aftercare support but hey who cares about ex cast, their NTA winners".

In response to Paige's accusations, a Channel 4 spokesperson said: “The welfare of contributors – past and present – is of paramount importance and robust protocols are in place to support contributors before, during and after taking part in the series.”

Paige also revealed to BirminghamLive that her relationship with her mum has also suffered since departing the show. She said: "There have been problems within the family and my mum was given an ultimatum.

"The decision means I have nothing to do with her now. I think the decision is irreversible. It is very sad but that's life unfortunately."

Tom Malone Jr

The popular Gogglebox star quit the show in February 2021. He said: "So after 6 and a half years it’s finally time to put down the remote, and to say goodbye to Gogglebox.

"I've loved every minute and I’m eternally grateful to @channel4 and @studiolambert for allowing me to be a part of the show. But new opportunities are knocking on the door and it’s time to explore them."

Since making the decision to leave, Tom has worked with different brands promoting their products, such as Hooch and Personalised Gifts. He's also appeared on Celebrity Coach Trip with his girlfriend Bryony Briscoe.

Chris Ashby-Steed

Chris Ashby-Steed quit Gogglebox after he split up with Stephen Webb (Channel 4)

Stephen Webb and Chris Ashby-Steed were the stand-out stars when Gogglebox first hit our screens. The hairdressers had viewers in stitches every week with their sarcastic one-liners and hilarious gags.

Unfortunately the couple did split up, but Chris and Stephen remained friends and carried on filming until he stepped down. However, behind-the-scenes the pair were secretly locked in a bitter feud.

Their friendship was soon in tatters after a series of off-screen rows that viewers had no idea about. Chris vanished from the screen after a planned TV project involving the pair fell through and he has since suffered from depression.

Gogglebox’s producers agreed the popular pair could appear with new partners on alternate weeks, but this didn't come to fruition.Stephen initially brought in mum Pat and now appears with his new husband, Daniel Lustig, who has become a regular fixture.

Sadly, Chris has not returned to our screens, but lives happily with husband Tony.

Silent Jay Makin

You know you've made it on Gogglebox when you don't say a word and become one the most popular stars of the show.

Jay Makin, better known as 'Silent Jay', proved that you don't have to be the most vocal personality to be a hit. He was the boyfriend of Eve Woerdenweber, appearing on the sofa with her mum Viv and German-born dad Ralf from The Wirral.

Gogglebox viewers were often left in hysterics as Jay sat in silence while the family discussed the show's on-screen. However, in a gutting twist, Jay's time on the show came to a sudden end in 2015 when he split up with Eve.

When asked about filming with his ex and her family being awkward, Jay insisted was not as they had decided to remain friends. He claimed there were "no hard feelings" between the pair - even if she did have a new boyfriend.

Despite supposedly signing up with the Woerdenwebers for another series of the show, viewers were upset that he just vanished and was never seen again.

A Channel 4 spokesperson told Mirror Online: "It’s with great regret that Silent Jay is no longer in this series of Gogglebox. He has been an excellent contributor to Gogglebox, and we are very grateful for all he has given to the show."

Jay now keeps a low profile on social media but was working at Baa Bar Fleet Street in Liverpool after leaving the show. He also decided to have a makeover, getting rid of his long hair for a neater style.
