During a recent congressional hearing, Chairman Jim Jordan questioned Robert Hur regarding the access to audiotapes of individuals interviewed during an investigation. Hur, a former Department of Justice employee, stated that he was not in a position to express an opinion on whether Congress should have access to the audiotapes, deferring the decision to the White House and DOJ leadership.

Chairman Jordan pressed Hur on the importance of Congress having access to the same information that was available during the investigation. Hur emphasized that his conclusions were based on a comprehensive review of all evidence, including audio recordings, and not solely on transcripts.

Jordan highlighted the value of the audio recordings in reaching conclusions and questioned why Congress should not have access to this crucial information. Hur reiterated that while he could not comment on whether Congress should have access, the audio recordings played a significant role in his investigative process.

The Justice Department released transcripts on the day of the hearing, prompting Jordan to express the need for timely access to information for effective questioning. He emphasized the importance of transparency and access to all relevant evidence for congressional oversight.

Despite the back-and-forth exchange, Hur maintained his stance that it was not his place to determine whether Congress should have access to the audiotapes. He underscored the comprehensive nature of his investigation and the significance of audio recordings in reaching informed conclusions.

The discussion underscored the ongoing debate over congressional access to critical evidence in investigations, highlighting the need for clarity and transparency in the oversight process.
