Forget Hard Seltzer, Sam Adams Goes After a New Market

Just in time for back yard barbeques, picnics, and just getting outside in general, Boston Beer Company (SAM) is bringing something new to the party.

Boston Beer Company already has a slew of drinks on tap as the makers of Samuel Adams, Truly Hard Seltzer, Twisted Tea, Angry Orchard and Dogfish Head. One thing for certain about some of these brands is that these tastes sure come with some attitude.

Between all the different brands Boston Beer Company has, one might think it has an all-inclusive tap room for any taste. Dogfish Head Brewery alone has a variety of IPAs, Pilsners, Citrus, Pale Ales, and Stout beer. It also has spirits like rum, gin, vodka, whiskey, liqueur and brandy, and canned cocktails. Its products can be found at restaurants as well as on the liquor store shelves. It's not just drinks that Boston Beer Company has a hand in the marketing, it also sells merchandise and you can stay at Dogfish Inn, Tasting Room and Kitchen just to name a few.

With all the selections of beverages, it's hard to think of what Boston Beer Company could be adding to the lineup. None the less, expanding Boston Beers already long list of beverages is happening, but this is a bit different than all its other drinks.

Boston Beer Fills Cooler With New Drink

Boston Beer Company is bringing a new twist on cocktails this summer with Slingers Signatures Cocktails. Slingers are a malt-based cocktail-style drink that come in the convenience of a can. The cocktails come in a 24-ounce can and have 8% ABV. Slingers comes in three flavors, Bahama Mama, Peach Screwdriver and Pineapple Punch.

"With its strong points of difference, relatable brand ethos and malt-based recipe, we really feel like we've got a winner in Slingers," said Boston Beer’s Manager of Innovation Andrea Desaulniers. "And the brand's physical attributes – a convenient, single-serve package with a higher-than-average ABV and eye-catching graphics – make it especially suited for the convenience store class-of-trade. So, we're doubling down and stacking our chips there!"

The Slingers Bahama Mama is a blend of mango and tropical flavors and is meant to help transport customers back to vacations on warm, sunny beaches. Slingers Peach Screwdriver is described as a delightful blend of orange citrus and peach flavors. Pineapple Punch is mix of a little pineapple and a little punch to create a new citrus summer drink.

Unfortunately, this fun new summer line up is only available in a limited capacity at select locations in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire, Desaulniers said.

"Cracking open a can of Slingers instantly transports you to good times. Whether that's a neighbor's backyard bash, a beach-side bartender slingin' drinks, or somewhere in between – no judgment, here!"

If you are looking to test out the new Slingers, just check out DrinkSlingers, type in your location and see if you are lucky enough to be close to a testing market.

Boston Beer Tests Market

Boston Beer Company has markets that are both regional and national putting the company in a unique position to be able to test products on a more local level and working out any problems before going nationwide with a new product.

"Our two-tiered approach to innovation allows us to be both 'big and small'," said Boston Beer's Head of Innovation, Robert Vail. "Regional test-and-learns like Slingers enable us to jump on trends quickly while also giving us the space to gather direct consumer feedback and hone the brand before expanding. It's the best of both worlds. Our two-tiered approach to innovation allows us to be both ‘big and small’.”

While the new Slingers aren't available nationwide, if the local level is successful, the company might branch out and get more cans into customers hands this summer.
