The death of an e-scooter rider as he sped away from a patrol vehicle in Townsville has sparked an internal police probe.

The 35-year-old local man suffered life-threatening injuries when the e-scooter he was riding collided with the gutter in the early hours of Thursday.

He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead the next day.

Queensland Police say the rider had been speeding away from a patrol vehicle before the crash.

Ethical Standards Command is investigating the incident on behalf of the State Coroner, and the investigation will be overseen by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
