Escape to the Country: Wye Valley lures city-slicking Bristol couple to the fields and rivers

Bristol couple Daniel and Daniel, known as Dan and Daniel, found themselves charmed by the change of lifestyle on Escape to the Country. On today's episode, they had a budget of £500,000 and were looking for a four-bed character property with a garden and utility space within an hour and 10 minutes from Bristol - host Steve Brown didn't disappoint.

The first property, an extended Victorian cottage in the Gloucestershire village of Milkwall, was under their budget by £75,000 and contained charming period features and the added bonus of a couple of log burners - an excellent solution to saving money on those energy bills.

Access to the Forest of Dean was right on the doorstep, and had the couple feeling very positive about the area.

On a walk to The Prospect, a public garden in Ross-on-Wye, the walk past the many independent shops and beautiful views of the area had the couple feeling like leaving the city was the right choice for them.

The second was in Shirenewton, Monmouthshire and was just under their budget. Once again it had gorgeous period features but the kitchen was deemed a little small.

Steve Brown's 'mystery house' seemed to be the one for the couple though, found in Upper Lydbrook in Gloucestershire it is bright blue and, despite being a new build, makes them rethink due to the clever layout of the property.

It's the enchanting nature of the area that really speaks to the couple though; it's full of adventure with options for swimming, canoeing, kayaking and climbing. Steve Brown takes them on a trip down the river Wye that hosts kingfishers, otter and mink, the couple say they have "never been better" as they paddle leisurely down the calm waters of the river.

"Well this is the life isn't it?" says Daniel.

"It is indeed I could certainly get used to this," says Dan, "and it certainly beats an M4 commute!"

A quick look online shows that the 5 bed blue property in Upper Lydbrook has gone, so who knows - perhaps Dan and Daniel took the plunger after all.
