Emergency services respond to car driving off M1 bridge at Cooranbong

NSW Ambulance and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter have been called to report a car drove off the M1 at Cooranbong

EMERGENCY services have been called to Cooranbong following reports a car had driven off a ramp on the M1 this afternoon.

NSW Ambulance said a vehicle with a single occupant drove off the edge Pacific Motorway at around 4pm, landing on Newport Road below.

"This was a significant response for NSW Ambulance paramedics, who arrived to find a vehicle that had fallen several metres from the road above," NSW Ambulance Inspector Andrew Craig said.

"The driver had sustained critical head and chest injuries and multiple fractures to his limbs.

"NSW Ambulance paramedics and the medical team from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter treated the man at the scene, preparing him to be airlifted to hospital for further treatment."

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter team, who were tasked to the scene, said the driver was a man believed to be in his 30s, who sustained multiple fractures and chest injuries in the accident.

"The patient was trapped in his vehicle before being released by emergency services," a Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokesperson said shortly before 6pm.

"He has been treated by NSWA paramedics and the Helicopter Critical Care Medical Team and will shortly be airlifted to John Hunter Hospital.

"He is in a serious but stable condition."
