Egypt Sends Delegation To Israel For Cease-Fire Talks

Egyptian head of Intelligence Abbas Kamel attends a meeting of Egyptian and Sudnaese Foreign Ministers and heads of intelligence at Tahrir Palace, in Cairo, Egypt, Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018. Egypt

Egypt is sending a high-level delegation to Israel in the hope of reaching a cease-fire agreement with Hamas in Gaza. The delegation, led by Egypt's top intelligence official, Abbas Kamel, aims to establish a prolonged cease-fire in Gaza with Israeli officials. Talks will initially focus on an exchange of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners and the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes in northern Gaza.

Hamas has demanded a permanent cease-fire and full withdrawal of Israeli troops, while Israel insists on continuing military operations until Hamas is defeated. Israel has also intensified raids on Rafah, a city where a significant portion of Gaza's population has sought refuge.

The Egyptian delegation will emphasize Egypt's stance against Israel's troop deployments along Gaza's borders with Egypt. Efforts are being made to negotiate a short cease-fire in Gaza to pave the way for a longer truce and prevent a potential offensive in Rafah.

Lebanon's Hezbollah group attacked an Israeli military convoy in a disputed area along the border, resulting in the death of an Israeli civilian. The incident occurred in an area claimed by both Lebanon and Israel, known as the Kfar Chouba hills in Lebanon and Har Dov in Israel.

Hezbollah's actions are seen as a show of solidarity with Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that initiated the conflict with an attack on southern Israel. The ongoing fighting between Hezbollah and Israel has led to casualties on both sides and raised concerns about escalating tensions in the region.

Tensions remain high as efforts are made to secure a cease-fire agreement in Gaza and prevent further violence along the Israel-Lebanon border.
