Edinburgh Trams will return to city centre next week as stops reopen

Edinburgh residents will be able to once again travel on trams into the city centre from next week.

Edinburgh Trams announced that they are returning to St Andrew Square and Princes Street stops by the end of this month.

Following the permanent closure of the York Place stop on February 10, services have been terminating, temporarily, at West End.

Since then, work to take down the tram stop in York Place has been progressing well, as has the complex installation of new infrastructure associated with the Trams to Newhaven project.

When the new 2.91 mile (4.69km) line opens, as well as connecting Leith and Newhaven with the city centre, a new stop at Picardy Place will replace the old one at York Place.

This will make for easy access to St James Quarter, the Omni Centre, and the top of Leith Walk.

Lea Harrison, Edinburgh Trams Managing Director said it was a big 'step forward for the project.

He commented: "The reopening of stops to St Andrew Square will mark yet another significant step forward as we look towards the launch of services to Newhaven next year.

"We continue to work closely with our partners on this exciting project and, over the next couple of weeks we will be carrying out extensive testing and commissioning on the line between West End and St Andrew Square to ensure we can resume a safe and reliable service in the city centre."
