Derek Draper’s final days will be shown in documentary presented by wife Kate Garraway

Derek Draper will appear with his wife, Kate Garraway, in an emotional documentary focusing on his last weeks before his passing.

The lobbyist died in January aged 56 from a heart attack after battling a devastating early strain of covid-19 following the onset of the pandemic in 2020.

Good Morning Britain star Garraway will be presenting the documentary having returned to work not long after the death of her husband of nearly 20 years.

Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story will air on ITV1 on Tuesday at 9pm and will be available to stream on ITVX.

A trailer shows Mr Draper sitting in bed, saying: “My name’s Derek Draper, I want you to hear my story.”

He communicates with a notepad and pen with the illness limiting his speech, and is also shown to spell out that “covid changed everything”, the Sun has reported

The documentary follows the award-winning Finding Derek and Caring for Derek.

Derek’s Story was the idea of the man himself and charts his final months as Garraway reportedly went into financial difficulty to try and find a cure.

It also contains scenes with the couple’s children Darcey, 18, and Billy, 14.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Garraway said: “It's been pretty emotional actually. Makes you want to jump on the screen and give him a hug.

“You can't quite believe that he's not with us to watch his story. But hopefully, it will be very useful for others who are going through the same thing. That's the dream and the wish.”

She added: “It was his idea to make this and his story, so hopefully as I say, when it's aired next Tuesday, it will bring a lot of help to a lot of people who are in the situation Derek's in with long-term illness and those around them that care for them and the professional carers as well.”
