Death of man found in Jesmond field not being treated as suspicious, police say

Officers investigating the discovery of a man’s body in Jesmond have confirmed they are not treating his death as suspicious.

Shortly after midnight on May 31, police were alerted by the ambulance service to a report of concern for the welfare of a man in a field off Highbury, Jesmond.

Emergency services attended but sadly the man – aged in his 50s – was confirmed to be deceased at the scene. His next of kin have been notified.

An investigation was launched, but following a range of enquiries carried out, police have confirmed they do not believe the man’s death to be suspicious. A report will now be made for the coroner.

Detective Chief Inspector Angela Hudson, who led the investigation, said: “First and foremost our thoughts remain with the man’s family at what is an absolutely devastating time for them.

“I would ask that their privacy is respected as they attempt to come to terms with the events of the last 24 hours.

“A full investigation was launched as we looked to build a clearer picture as to the circumstances surrounding his death. As a result of those enquiries, we're satisfied that there was no third party involvement and we are not treating his death as suspicious.

“I'd like to thank local residents for their cooperation and patience as we carried out our enquiries. It is very much appreciated.”
