David Tennant wants his kids to 'grow up free and be themselves'

David Tennant has opened up about his kids' future saying that he wants them to "grow up free and be able to be themselves". The Scots Doctor Who actor has been speaking on a podcast and added "the things that we always assumed were sacrosanct aren’t any longer."

The father-of-five will be returning to the BBC classic science-fiction programme for a short time later this year, after fans were left shocked when in Jodie Whittaker's final episode, she regenerated into David Tennant. Fans had been expecting it to be Ncuti Gatwa, who had been confirmed as the new Doctor.

Tennant played the Doctor from 2005 to 2010, and has been speaking to Wholala: A Doctor Who Podcast, where he said: "I want to know that my kids will grow up free and able to be themselves. The things that we always assumed were sacrosanct aren’t any longer.

"I think there are moments right now where we see the status quo slipping, we see protections that were accepted as standard and immutable are being challenged. That, as a father, scares me. That we could be living in a world where rights that we thought were human rights and are incontrovertible are being challenged.

"I want to know that my kids will grow up free and able to be themselves. And that nobody’s going to have a problem with that. Because if it’s just about somebody expressing who they are, they should be able to do it."

David Tennant is reprising his doctor role on Doctor Who (ITV)

Meanwhile, last weekend, Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway returned to our television screens with David Tennant as the very first Guest Announcer. The lads seemed delighted as they welcomed millions of viewers for the first episode of the new series and gave a warm welcome to the Doctor Who star.

Ant said: "Quite emotional here, let's say hello to our first guest announcer of the series. He's starred in the likes of Doctor Who, Harry Potter and Litvinenko. "It's David Tennant...," Ant asked him: "How are you David? Who replied: "I am exceptionally well, thank you."

Dec steamed in and said: "David, we've go to speak to you about this. This has had a lot of coverage in the press. Ant and I just wanted to say how excited we are that this year you're returning to one of the most prestigious rolls of your entire career."

David replied: "Well, I don't want to say who I am playing. Needless to say I am going back in time and I am returning as..." Before Ant & Dec both joked: "Our star Guest Announcer. Great to have you back."
