Craig Revel Horwood recalls Paul O'Grady's bittersweet final words to Annie stage show co-stars

Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood has paid tribute to comedian and broadcaster Paul O’Grady, who passed away aged 67 in March. The 58-year-old, who recently reprised his role of Miss Hannigan in musical Annie, was chatting to Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on ITV’s This Morning on Thursday, May 4.

Remembering Paul, who shared the role of Miss Hannigan, Craig said: “It was after Edinburgh, he said his goodbyes and how much he was enjoying doing it. He did two weeks of the run and then we were to share the role out and suddenly we had the news that he’d passed and no one could really believe it. He said in Edinburgh ‘I’ll see you all in Southampton’...

“When I turned up for my week, we then of course dedicated all the performances that week to Paul. It was a shock for the company, it was a shock for all of us. We didn’t know what was going to happen, but we had to get on with the show… as they say the show must go on, but it was really emotional. It was really hard to breathe and to get through because we were all in that state of panic and shock.”

Craig previously commemorated Paul’s life in a post on Instagram. At the time of his death he wrote: “I’m in a state of shock this morning, waking up to the news that my gorgeous colleague and friend, Paul O’Grady has passed away. I’m actually reeling in disbelief. He was such a wonderful human being, funny and to the point. Paul, legend, RIP darling.”

Paul's partner Andre Portasio shared the tragic news of the star's passing in a statement on March 29. “It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening,” Mr Portasio said in his statement.

“We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion.

“I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years.” For the latest TV and showbiz news sign up to our newsletter here.
