Costa Coffee to close permanently in Greater Manchester town centre

A Greater Manchester town centre has been dealt a blow after a coffee giant announced its plans to leave. Costa Coffee has confirmed its branch in Wigan town centre will shut for the final time on Sunday, June 25.

The café is currently situated on the upper floor of the Grand Arcade Shopping Centre, which opened its doors in 2007. It means the town centre will be left without a Costa branch, with the nearest found at Robin Park.

There are no current plans for any further Costa Coffee closures in Greater Manchester, the Manchester Evening News understands. The firm's major rivals Starbucks and Caffe Nero remain in Wigan town centre, along with a number of independent cafés.

But the news marks another loss for the Grand Arcade following the closures of BHS, TK Maxx, Marks & Spencer and Debenhams in the past seven years. Meanwhile, the Galleries shopping centre is being demolished to make way for a new £135 million complex.

The project is set to include with a cinema, bowling alley, leisure activities, restaurants, a hotel and new housing. Town hall bosses hope the scheme will be ready in 2025 to give Wigan's centre a boost.

A Costa Coffee spokesperson said: "We can confirm that the Costa Coffee store located in the Grand Arcade Shopping Centre in Wigan, will close its doors on June 25, 2023. We are supporting our team members ahead of the closure to identify opportunities at our other local Costa Coffee stores.

"We are sorry for the inconvenience the closure may cause but are pleased to be able to continue serving customers their favourite Costa coffee at our nearby store in Robin Park, Loire Drive, Wigan. Customers can also visit www.costa.co.uk/locations/store-locator/map to find their nearest store.”
