The Washington Commanders have lured former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers over to the NFL to help the team conduct its search for a new head of football operations and coach after firing Ron Rivera on Monday, team officials told ESPN. Former Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman will assist Myers in the search.
Myers, a two-time NBA executive of the year, will be tasked with identifying and coordinating interviews with candidates for both open jobs.
This is just the first step in a massive leadership overhaul by new owner Josh Harris, who led a group to acquire the team in 2023 from the embattled previous owner, Daniel Snyder. Myers was the architect behind assembling a Warriors core that has won four NBA championships since 2015, but he stepped down in June and has since joined ESPN as an NBA analyst—a role he will keep going forward. Spielman brings 30 years of NFL executive experience as well.
“I have been fortunate to know Josh Harris for many years and his commitment to building championship-caliber teams is what drew me here,” Myers said in a statement. “In my experience, championship infrastructure begins with a strong ownership group that prioritizes culture and invests in attracting the industry’s most talented and innovative leaders …This is the type of opportunity that really inspires me, and I look forward to contributing to the next chapter of this storied franchise.”

Washington general manager Martin Mayhew and executive vice president of football/player personnel Marty Hurney will remain on staff through the search process, team officials told ESPN. The new head of football operations and coach will determine their futures with the Commanders.
The team finished 2023 with a 4–13 record, securing the No. 2 pick in April’s draft.
