Cinephil Acquires World Rights To U.S. Doc 'Black Snow'

Documentary 'Black Snow' directed by Alina Simone and produced by Kirstine Barfod.

Documentary sales company Cinephil has secured the worldwide rights to the U.S. documentary film 'Black Snow,' directed and produced by Alina Simone of Prettier in the Dark Productions. The film, set to make its debut at Copenhagen's CPH:DOX in the F:ACT competition program, marks Simone's first feature-length documentary collaboration with Academy Award-nominated producer Kirstine Barfod.

'Black Snow' follows the compelling story of Russian environmental journalist Natalia Zubkova, known as the 'Erin Brockovich of Russia,' as she courageously battles against corruption in the coal mining industry and environmental devastation in her Siberian hometown of Kiselyovsk. The film captures Natalia's relentless pursuit of truth and justice, despite facing opposition from the Russian government.

The documentary unfolds against the backdrop of the years 2019 to 2023, a period marked by escalating crackdowns on dissent and the outbreak of war in Ukraine. Natalia's advocacy for her community, highlighted by her viral video plea for environmental refugees status, sheds light on the dire consequences of unchecked industrial exploitation.

Simone, drawn to Natalia's story in 2019, was inspired by the journalist's fearless activism and decided to document her journey. Filming alongside Natalia in Siberia, Simone faced surveillance and challenges but was deeply moved by Natalia's unwavering commitment to her cause.

With a focus on raising awareness about environmental refugees, coal mining impacts, authoritarianism, and press freedom, the filmmakers aim to spark meaningful conversations through 'Black Snow.' The documentary's production received support from various philanthropic foundations, film funds, and organizations dedicated to freedom of the press.

Cinephil, a key partner in the project, expressed enthusiasm for Natalia's story and praised Simone's storytelling prowess. The world premiere of 'Black Snow' at CPH:DOX is scheduled for March 19, coinciding with a filmmaker dialogue session featuring Simone and Japanese filmmaker Shio Ito.
