China's Envoy Wang Kejian Meets With Hamas Leader

Blinken visits Egypt as part of Middle East tour on Gaza

China's Foreign Ministry confirmed that its envoy Wang Kejian held a meeting with Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Qatar, marking the first acknowledged encounter between a Chinese official and Hamas since October 7. The discussion, which took place on Sunday, involved the exchange of views on the Gaza conflict and other pertinent matters.

During the meeting, Haniyeh emphasized the urgency of halting aggression and violence, urging the Israeli military to withdraw from Gaza to facilitate the realization of political objectives, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, as reported by a Hamas media office statement.

Prior to this meeting, Wang visited the occupied West Bank and engaged with Palestinian Foreign Affairs Minister Riyad Al-Maliki. Wang expressed China's deep concern over the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, highlighting the country's efforts towards achieving a ceasefire and safeguarding civilian lives.

Subsequently, Wang traveled to Israel and met with Hagai Shagrir, the head of the Israeli Foreign Ministry's Asia and Pacific Bureau. During this meeting, Wang reiterated the importance of a comprehensive ceasefire, cessation of hostilities, provision of humanitarian aid, and protection of civilians, underscoring the call for a two-state solution.

Wang's diplomatic engagements in the Middle East commenced on March 10, encompassing discussions with officials in Egypt, the West Bank, Israel, and Qatar. This diplomatic tour signifies China's active involvement in seeking peaceful resolutions and humanitarian assistance in the region amidst escalating tensions.
