Channel 4 Know Your Sh*t: Woman 'didn't want to go out' because her farts were so explosive

The Channel 4 show Know Your S**t: Inside Our Guts explores gut and digestive health and one woman on the show was able to transform her gut health when she cut out eating crisps. The programme aims to help people with many different dietary problems.

Carmel is a businesswoman and went to Poo HQ, the base of the show, to get help for extreme bloating and explosive farts. She said: "You don't know if you are farting or if it is not just going to be a fart and it is going to be something else".

Her extreme bloating and forceful farts have limited Carmel's social life as she worries about going out, meeting new people romantically, and going for dinner. She said: "It does impact me because I just don't want to go out."

She was told by the experts Dr Rabia Topan and Sophie Medlin to cut some food out of her diet, including crisps, mangos, and coffee. Although Carmel couldn't quite kick her coffee habit she was able to cut out crisps and noticed a huge difference. Carmel was advised to go on the low fodmap diet, where you get rid of foods that have a high amount of fermentable carbohydrates. This includes crisps as they often have onion or garlic power in them, which is a high fodmap food and triggers the bloating and farts.

After cutting out crisps and other high fodmap foods including mango Carmel said she is "definitely much better" and said she no longer worries if her fart will be anything more. She said: "I'm definitely much better, I don't have that absolute bloat or wondering if it's a fart or if you are going to need the toilet, I don't have that anymore. And also when I do have gas, it is not smelly."

Know Your S**t: Inside Our Guts airs every Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
