Central Coast Mariners Make History By Winning AFC Cup

Central Coast Mariners win AFC Cup, first Australian club to do so.

Central Coast Mariners have made history by becoming the first Australian club to win the AFC Cup. The team, led by coach Mark Jackson, secured a 1-0 victory over Lebanon's Al-Ahed in the final held at the Sultan Qaboos Stadium in Muscat.

The winning goal came from substitute Alou Kuol, who scored in the 84th minute to clinch the trophy for the Mariners. Kuol's decisive goal was a result of teamwork and determination, as he followed the instructions of Coach Jackson to give his all for the team.

Captain Danny Vukovic expressed his joy at lifting the AFC Cup, acknowledging the tough competition from Al-Ahed and the unwavering support of the Mariners' fans who traveled all the way from Australia to cheer them on.

The victory in the AFC Cup adds to Central Coast Mariners' recent success, as they had also secured the A-League Premiers' Plate just days before. The team now faces Sydney FC in the semifinals as they aim to defend their A-League Championship title.

This triumph marks a significant milestone for Australian football, with Central Coast Mariners joining Western Sydney Wanderers as the only Australian clubs to have won continental trophies. The AFC Cup will soon be replaced by new club competitions in the Asian region, signaling a new era for football in the continent.
