The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently issued an advisory regarding the dangers associated with counterfeit or mishandled Botox injections. This warning comes after reports of harmful reactions from fake versions of the product in several states.

At least 22 women have experienced adverse effects after receiving counterfeit Botox injections, shots from unlicensed providers, or injections in non-healthcare settings such as spas or private homes. These incidents have been reported in multiple states including California, Colorado, Florida, and New York City.

The affected patients, aged 25 to 59, reported symptoms such as blurred vision, drooping eyelids, and weakness. While 11 individuals required hospitalization, fortunately, there have been no reported fatalities.

The CDC highlighted that these incidents are linked to products obtained from unlicensed sources and administered by unlicensed or licensed providers. The FDA emphasized the risks associated with purchasing and using counterfeit products, urging healthcare professionals to prioritize patient safety.

Counterfeit Botox products can be identified by specific lot numbers and packaging discrepancies, such as incorrect dosage information and non-English language on the packaging.

Botulism, a serious illness caused by botulinum toxin, can result from the diffusion of Botox beyond the injection site. Prompt medical care is crucial in treating botulism, as the disease can progress to paralysis if left untreated.

Authentic Botox products are supplied by AbbVie and Allergan Aesthetics, who emphasized their commitment to product safety and authenticity. Consumers can verify the authenticity of Botox products through specific packaging features.

Dr. Michael Cameron, a dermatologist, highlighted the importance of receiving Botox treatments from licensed providers to ensure proper dosing and quality assurance. He advised patients to seek treatment from specialized healthcare professionals based on their specific needs.

Given the potential risks associated with counterfeit Botox, individuals are urged to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of products before undergoing treatment.
