Carmine Starnino Named Editor-in-Chief

Carmine Starnino is the new editor-in-chief of The Walrus. Starnino has served in several roles in editorial over the last eight years, including as senior editor, deputy editor, editor-at-large, and most recently, interim editor-in-chief. He will be based in Montreal as part of the organization’s cross-country presence.

Prior to The Walrus, he was a founding editor at Maisonneuve and worked as the senior editor at Reader’s Digest Canada. He is also an award-winning poet.

“Carmine brings a breadth of experience, including many years growing the voice and stories published by The Walrus,” says Jennifer Hollett, executive director of The Walrus. “In the last year, he has led the editorial team and worked across departments to tell more stories on thewalrus.ca. He also launched the contributing writer program, and identified new revenue opportunities.”

The editor-in-chief is responsible for the overall editorial strategy of The Walrus, both online at thewalrus.ca and in print. Starnino will sit on the management team as a senior leader and work closely with the executive director and the digital, development, marketing, audience, and revenue teams.

The Walrus is governed by a national board of directors and an education review committee. We are committed to fact-based journalism, and to creating forums for conversations vital to Canadians on various platforms from coast to coast to coast.

“I’m proud of what this team has accomplished so far and excited by the opportunity to help reimagine what The Walrus can be for a new generation of readers,” said Starnino. “Online and in print, we have been home to some of the boldest and most accomplished journalism in the country. I fully intend to keep it that way.”

2023 marked the 20th anniversary of The Walrus. As we kick off a new year, Starnino will help lead the organization and the talented editorial and art teams into the next 20 years.
