A tragic incident occurred in St. Petersburg, Russia, when a bus veered off a bridge and plunged into the Moika River, resulting in the loss of seven lives. The city, which is Russia's second-largest, was shaken by the accident that took place on Friday.
The Investigative Committee, Russia's top criminal investigations body, confirmed the death toll but did not provide details on the number of injuries. However, the emergencies ministry indicated that six individuals rescued from the bus were in critical or serious condition.
Reports from Russian news sources revealed that the city bus was carrying 15 passengers when it crashed through a barrier and fell into the river. Fortunately, six individuals managed to escape the sinking bus on their own.
Surveillance footage released by the Russian media captured the bus speeding, making a sharp turn onto the bridge, colliding with another vehicle, and ultimately breaking through the barrier into the water.
Authorities in St. Petersburg disclosed that the bus owner had incurred 23 fines for various violations in the past. It was noted that most of the city's bus services are operated by private companies.
The bus driver was taken into custody by the police. His wife shared with the media that he had been compelled by managers to work a morning shift after already completing a 20-hour shift the day before with minimal rest.
An investigation has been launched into potential traffic violations and the provision of unsafe travel services in connection with the tragic incident in St. Petersburg.
