Bristol City Women unable to provide final gloss on promotion season with defeat at Birmingham

Bristol City were unable to end their promotion season with victory as Birmingham City stormed to a thrilling 2-0 victory over the Robins in their final Women's Championship game of their season.

Despite the Robins having already sealed their promotion to the Women's Super League last week, the match was still set to be the hottest contest of the weekend as the top two sides went head-to-head.

The hosts started the more energetic and Lucy Quinn rewarded her team by opening the scoring on 14 minutes, getting on the end of a Charlie Devlin passing and firing it into the bottom corner.

Several more efforts were blocked for the Blues by a rallying Bristol City defence, before Shania Hayles made a move for the visitors. The forward burst through the line and beelined for goal but was brought down by Gemma Lawley who was booked for the challenge.

On the stroke of half-time, Devlin doubled Birmingham's lead, her initial header saved but on the receiving end of the rebound to smash it in before the break.

The Robins had a point to prove early in the second half, with quick-fire efforts from Abi Harrison and Emily Syme putting pressure on the hosts.

Naomi Layzell was called into action, blocking a dangerous ball before having a chance of her own from close range, an incredible diving save from Lucy Thomas denying the score.

City continued to knock-on the door in the closing stages but were unable to salvage a goal as Birmingham finished their season with seven wins in a row but missed out on promotion by virtue of a point.
