BREAKING: Multiple flood alerts issued in Greater Manchester following days of torrential rain - map of areas affected

Multiple flood alerts are in place across Greater Manchester following days of torrential rain.

The Environment Agency has issued an alert for the Middle River Mersey catchment, including areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston. A second alert is currently in place for the Upper River Douglas, which covers areas including Wigan and Standish.

A further alert has been issued for the River Mersey Uplands catchment including Hyde, Ashton-under-Lyne, Denton and Glossop. The EA says: "The Mersey Uplands catchment includes Rivers Goyt, Tame, Sett and Etherow and their tributaries. Other locations which may be affected are around Mossley, New Mills, Hazel Grove, Marple, Romiley and Hyde."

Experts have also issued an alert for the River Bollin catchment just over the border in Cheshire, which includes parts of Knutsford, Wilmslow, Macclesfield and Bollington. In the areas covered by the flood alerts, people have been warned that 'flooding is possible' - so to 'be prepared'.

Local residents are being advised to avoid low lying footpaths or entering areas prone to flooding. Homeowners are urged to put a flood plan into action if they have one.

The Environment Agency is monitoring local water levels and weather conditions in the areas. The alerts come following days of torrential rain across Greater Manchester.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain covering our region for much of the day on Tuesday, as well as for parts of Cheshire, Merseyside and Lancashire. The rain lead to flooding on some local roads, with cars left submerged underway and motorways closed off due to the tricky driving conditions.

Gardens were left submerged underwater and some trains were also halted or forced to run at reduced speeds, causing further delays. Forecasters predict that weather conditions will be much calmer today (Thursday).

In Greater Manchester, the weather is expected to be partly cloudy this morning before some light showers are forecast for the afternoon. Temperatures will reach a maximum of around 11C.

There may be more light showers tomorrow morning, according to the Met Office, paired with cloudy and sunny spells. The mercury is expected to reach a high of around 8C tomorrow, making it slightly colder.
