Best fish and chips in Scotland as awards are handed out to 'outstanding' takeaways and chippies

Three Ayrshire chippies netted awards at the inaugural Scottish Chippy Awards earlier this week.

The region is lauded for top quality food and drink with chip shops among some of the country's most popular.

And a number of takeaways in Ayrshire were recognised for their top quality fish and chips at the new awards celebrating the best in the industry.

We announced earlier this week that Kilmarnock's Plaice to Be was crowned the best in Ayrshire hours before the takeaway's heartbroken boss took the tough decision to close the shop forever as costs spiraled out of control.

The Plaice to Be wasn't the only East Ayrshire chippy to win an award with Darvel's Olympia Fish & Chips taking the title of Fish & Chips Bar of the Year in the south west.

The final Ayrshire award went to Melbourne Fry in Saltcoats as they took home the crown for family chippy of the year.

A spokesperson for The first Scottish Chippy Awards 2023 said: “These awards recognise the up-and-coming stars in the Scottish fish and chip scene. They acknowledge the fish and chip shops that go above and beyond, providing outstanding dining experiences in addition to their fantastic food. With a warm and inviting ambiance, excellent customer service, and a diverse menu that extends beyond fish and chips, the 2023 winners have captured the hearts and taste buds of their patrons.

“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the finalists and winners of the Scottish Chippy Awards 2023! Their passion for the craft and dedication to delivering exceptional quality have made them true leaders in the industry.”
