Barnard College Considers Lifting Suspensions For Protesting Students

Demonstrators protest in solidarity with Pro-Palestinian organizers on the Columbia University campus, in New York

Barnard College President Laura Rosenbury announced in an email to students that the majority of students on interim suspension do not have prior conduct violations. She mentioned that Barnard is considering lifting suspensions and restoring campus access for students who agree to a probationary period.

Following the clearance of a protest encampment on Columbia's East Lawn by the New York Police Department, several Barnard students, including Isra Hirsi, daughter of US Rep. Ilhan Omar, were suspended and arrested.

Rosenbury stated that students with previous violations will be handled carefully through the conduct process. Students on interim suspension are not allowed on campus but can still access college services such as health care, mental health counseling, and academic guidance.

Additionally, Barnard professors have the authority to allow students on interim suspension to attend classes remotely. Rosenbury emphasized the importance of exposure to diverse ideas in education and commended students for speaking out boldly. However, she stressed the significance of ensuring student safety and belonging on campus, urging mutual respect and protection, especially during disagreements.
