Application to lease Carluke cemetery building to a social club

A Clydesdale social group has requested to lease a former cemetery house for five years.

Carluke Men’s Shed have submitted a community asset transfer request to lease the building on 1 Kilmory Road in Carluke for social activities as the group currently only have two cabins set up in a temporary site.

If approved, the Shed wishes to set up and establish a recreational meeting place to allow members and visitors to meet on a regular basis.

The group are proposing to rent the property and land surrounding for £500 per year. If approved, the group will carry out any remedial works that are required after the property has been surveyed.

They have detailed the ways the site will be used, including to support the health and wellbeing of members and scheduling activities to meet the needs of members with a focus on specific days and evenings.

The Carluke Men’s Shed are also in the process of exploring ways to work with pupils and staff from the local high school to allow them to work with members of the shed and to gain some experience.

The Shed will carry out a community consultation with residents and the surrounding area to highlight any issues locals may have with the establishment of the Men’s Shed, and a questionnaire will also be given to residents.

A key commitment of the group is to work to develop relationships with their potential future neighbours to ensure the establishment is viewed as a positive development for the community.

Men’s Sheds are community spaces, across the UK, for men to connect, talk and to create. The aim of the Sheds are to reduce loneliness and isolation for men.

Anyone can make representations about the request for the community asset transfer to South Lanarkshire Council, they must be made in writing and include the name and address of the person making it. Representations must be made by August 11 and sent to Iain Mulholland, Community Engagement Team, Finance & Corporate Resources, Council HQ, Almada St, Hamilton, ML3 0AA or by e-mail to: CommunityAssetTransfer@southlanarkshire.gov.uk.
