Alan Hughes thinks one former Virgin Media star could return to the station

Virgin Media star Alan Hughes has said he thinks his former breakfast colleague Mark Cagney will return to Virgin Media someday.

Cagney left the Ballymount-based broadcaster in 2019 after 20 years at the station.

He revealed earlier this year that he had suffered a stroke on January 8.

But pal Alan said he regularly meets Mark for coffee and admitted Mark might return to TV if he hosted a music show.

Alan said: “We go for coffee. He’s great. He’s getting on really well. We go for coffee out in Sutton because it’s between me and where he lives.

“He loves the gossip,” he said jokingly.

But Alan said he can’t see Mark returning back to breakfast TV but he could see him hosting some sort of a music show.

“Mark is so into his music, I think he would love to do a late night music show.

“I think something like that might entice back alright but not the breakfast show or anything like that.

“I would say if anything would entice him it would be something to do with music because he is such a music fan.”

Meanwhile, Alan will be taking a break from Ireland AM until January 10 as he goes off to play Sammy Sausage in Snow White at the National Stadium, which is produced by his husband Karl Broderick.

Muireann O’Connell and Tommy Bowe will continue to co-host the show until Alan returns.

“I’m back on January 10. I have one day off. I’m off Christmas Day because we are doing the Joe Duffy Christmas Eve show.”

Opening about the panto returning after the pandemic, he said: “It’s great to be back and knowing there is no nervousness that it might close. We’re there and we’re on until January 8. That’s the great thing. It’s great to see it back.

“You just go 'will entertainment come back?' 'Will it be something that people will want to do?' We tried everything. We went online, we did a drive thru in Malahide.

“But nothing beats a thousand kids screaming ‘Don’t bite the apple’ at you.”

The much-loved play also stars Fair City star Adam Weafer, sportscaster Marty Morrissey, comedian Katherine Lynch and former Miss Ireland Pamela Uba.

The show begins today and will run till January 8, 2023 and tickets are priced from €25.
