Aboul Gheit: Situation in Occupied Palestinian Territories is On Verge of Explosion

The Arab League Council meeting at the level of foreign ministers (Asharq Al-Awsat)

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said that regional crises are weakening the collective security.

He made the remarks on Saturday at the opening session of the two-day Arab League Council meeting at the level of foreign ministers, in preparation for the 31st Arab League Summit, which will be held on Nov. 1-2 in Algiers.

Aboul Gheit criticized the insufficient involvement of the Arab group in resolving crises, warning that the world may forget these crises, as is currently happening with the Palestinian cause.

He said the issues facing Yemen, Syria, Libya and Sudan provided the opportunity for non-Arab forces to exploit the situation for their own interests, noting that addressing these crises and reaching political settlements remain the key solutions to halt foreign interventions.

“Some international parties are not seeking a solution to maintain the two-state solution,” Aboul Gheit warned, adding that the international community offers nothing but slogans.

The situation in the occupied territories is on the verge of an explosion, he stressed, calling for exerting serious efforts to strengthen the Palestinian people’s steadfastness and ensure the commitment to the recent reconciliation.

“I witnessed throughout a decade the signing of agreements that were not implemented.”

He affirmed that the Arab League expresses the will of the member states, hoping the Algiers summit would advance joint Arab action, given its members’ ability to achieve all the goals set.

Algeria’s Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra, for his part, said his country relies on all the member states’ contribution at the Algeria summit to overcome the traditional approaches and ensure a better future for Arabs.

He said that Palestinians are currently living their worst days due to the stalled political process and the occupation power’s persistence to impose a fait accompli.

Lamamra called for doubling the efforts to advance peace and reconciliation, hoping the summit would be a success.

The Palestinian cause, the Arab-Israeli conflict and its developments, solidarity with Lebanon, the developments of the Syrian crisis, the situation in Libya and Yemen, as well as support for peace and development in Sudan, Somalia, and Comoros are among the topics to be discussed during the upcoming summit.

The summit will also tackle Iran's occupation of the three Emirati islands and its intervention in the internal affairs of Arab countries, Arab national security and counterterrorism efforts.
