4 takeaways from the news Eagles are hiring Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator

Kellen Moore is back in the NFC East, and he’s in a prime position to become a painful thorn for his former team and coaching staff.

Adam Schefter reported that the former Cowboys and Chargers play caller has been hired as the Eagles offensive coordinator days after the team fired Brian Johnson.

The 35-year-old Moore spent the 2023 season as the Chargers’ offensive coordinator. After five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, he joined Brandon Staley’s staff in January 2023.

In 2023, the Chargers finished No. 18 in total yards and No. 21 in points scored. In 2019, the Cowboys offense finished No. 1 in yards and No. 6 in points with Moore as offensive coordinator.

Dallas was No. 1 in both categories in the 2021 season.

Whether it’s motion in the offense, Jalen Hurts playing under center, or fresh ideas, Moore is set to bring creativity and a non-stale approach to calling and scheming a successful offensive system.

Moore, 35, leaves the Los Angeles Chargers after just one season.

Prior Before that, he was the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2022, with the Dallas offense ranking in the top four in points per game (27.7), yards per game (391) and third-down conversion percentage (44%) in that span.

Dallas was ranked 6th, 17th, 1st and 4th in Moore’s four years running the offense, the first year under Jason Garrett and three under Mike McCarthy.

The Eagles took a step back offensively as quarterback Jalen Hurts threw a career-high 15 interceptions and Philadelphia slipped from third in points per game (28.1) to seventh (25.5), they went from ninth in passing (241.5 yards per game) to 16th (225.5) and fell from fifth in rushing (147.6) to eighth (128.8).

Eagles will still be a pass first team

Moore will without a doubt do a better job of maintaining an efficient run-pass balance, but make no mistake, Philadelphia will throw the ball early and often.

Moore will bring a modern offense that heavily features pre-snap motion and aggressive, vertical route concepts.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott had a career year under Moore in 2021, finishing that season with 4,449 passing yards on 68.8% completion percentage while throwing 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Prescott achieved career highs in passing attempts twice with Moore, with 596 attempts in both 2019 and 2021.
